A plain definition
Super intelligence, or superintelligence, describes an AI system that is far more capable than the best human minds across almost every area of thinking: science, strategy, problem-solving, persuasion and more. Not better at one task, like chess, but better at nearly all of them.
The idea is not new. In 1965 the mathematician I. J. Good described an "intelligence explosion", in which a machine smart enough to improve its own design could quickly outpace people. The philosopher Nick Bostrom brought the term into wide use with his 2014 book Superintelligence, describing an intellect that greatly exceeds human cognitive performance in virtually every domain.
Three terms people mix up
- Narrow AI: systems that do specific tasks well, such as image recognition or fraud detection. Most AI in business today started here.
- Artificial general intelligence (AGI): a system that can match human ability across most intellectual work. Definitions vary, and there is active debate about how close current systems are.
- Superintelligence: a system that goes well beyond human ability across the board.
Today's large language models sit somewhere between the first two. They handle a remarkable range of tasks, but they still make confident mistakes and need human judgement around them.
Is it coming?
Nobody knows, and anyone who gives you a firm date is guessing. Some of the largest AI companies now say openly that they are working toward it. Many serious researchers are sceptical of near-term timelines. Both views deserve attention, and neither should drive your next quarter's plan.
What it means for business now
The debate about superintelligence is interesting. For most business leaders, it is also a distraction from a more useful fact: the AI available today already changes how work gets done.
The practical response is the same whatever you believe about the future:
- Build the capability now. Businesses that learn to use today's AI well will be better placed for whatever comes next.
- Design for change. Tools will keep improving. Build workflows, data and governance that can take a better model without starting again.
- Keep people accountable. More capable AI raises the stakes of oversight. Decide now who checks what.
- Focus on outcomes. Time saved, costs reduced, revenue gained. These measures stay useful however capable the technology becomes.
