Grok Bot Updates 04: Grok Bot can now make phone calls, what it means for business

The official Grok Bot account has announced that Grok Bot can now make phone calls. The details are thin so far, but a bot that can pick up the phone is a real step for anyone running AI assistants in a business.

On 5 November (Melbourne time), the official Grok Bot account on X announced a new ability in a single line: "Grok Bot can now make phone calls." The post came with a short demo video.

That's the whole announcement so far. The official Grok Bot changelog at x.ai/changelog/bot doesn't list phone calls yet. Its latest entry is still version 0.78.1 from 27 October, which we covered in our last post. The Mac app has since moved to version 0.78.5, but that version has no changelog entry either.

So this post is deliberately short. We haven't tested the feature ourselves, and we won't guess at how it works, what it costs or which countries it's available in. We'll write a fuller guide once the official notes are published.

Why phone calls matter for an AI workforce

Up to now, a bot could mostly only reach people by email, chat or a website form. Plenty of everyday business still happens on the phone, especially in Australia: confirming a booking, checking stock with a supplier, chasing a delivery, or getting through to a business that doesn't answer email.

If a bot can make those calls, it can take on a whole category of small, repetitive jobs that currently land on a person's desk. For example:

  • Bookings. Calling a venue or supplier to confirm a time, rather than waiting on an email reply.
  • Supplier checks. Asking whether an item is in stock or when an order will ship.
  • Follow-ups. Chasing an overdue quote or a missed callback.

Keep approval controls front and centre

A phone call speaks for your business in real time, and you can't unsend it. Before you let any AI assistant call people for you, it's worth deciding:

  • which calls it may make on its own, and which need your OK first
  • what it may and may not agree to on a call, such as prices, bookings or commitments
  • how it tells you what was said afterwards

This is the same approach SI1 takes when designing AI workforces: give the bots useful work, and keep approval controls you can see over anything that commits you to something.

How to get started

  1. Keep Grok Bot updated to the latest version.
  2. Watch the official changelog for the full release notes on phone calls.
  3. Before switching it on, write down which calls you'd be happy for a bot to make, and which you'd want to approve first.
