Building a Business With AI From Day One: The Domestic Robot Experiment

What happens when AI is part of the founding operating model rather than software added later. Metrics included.

The hypothesis

Most businesses add AI to an operation that already exists. We wanted to see what happens when AI is part of the founding operating model instead: research, brand, build, content and marketing, all from day one.

The question: how quickly can a small operator build a credible Australian publication, and a revenue stream, when AI does most of the research, building and production?

The commercial experiment

Domestic Robot is a review and comparison site for home robots in Australia: robot vacuums, robot lawn mowers, pool robots, companion robots and humanoids. Local buying advice in the category is thin, and it is growing.

The business model is simple and staged. First, authority content that earns search traffic and trust. Second, affiliate revenue from that content. Later, sponsorship, advertising and brand partnerships once the audience exists.

Where AI is used

AI did most of the work that would normally need a small team:

  • Market research and competitor gap analysis
  • Brand: name, logo, category icons and visual identity
  • The website build, including site architecture and structured data
  • Product research and comparison tables
  • Search and AI-search strategy, and a 25-article content roadmap
  • Content drafting

One early decision shows how AI changes the calculus. The plan started on managed WordPress. We switched to a static site on Cloudflare Pages, because it cost less, loaded faster and was easier for AI to build and maintain end to end. Choosing a platform AI can work with mattered more than choosing the most popular one.

What remains human

Judgement, brand decisions, quality control, ethics and priorities stayed with a person. So did every account and every sign-up.

The clearest example is editorial honesty. Every review on the site is labelled "Researched", not "Tested", until a product has been used hands-on. AI can research a robot vacuum thoroughly. It cannot tell you how it handles your hallway rug. Saying so plainly is a human call, and a commercial one: trust is the asset.

Launch, by the numbers

Domestic Robot went live on 28 September 2026 with 21 URLs, including five category hubs, the first buying guides and three interactive tools. It joined Amazon Associates Australia the same day. Hosting costs nothing on Cloudflare's free plan, beyond the domain.

Affiliate revenue at launch: $0. That is the baseline, and it is the point. We will report from here.

What SI1 wants to learn

  • How long it takes for a new site to be indexed and to earn its first search impressions
  • How much content a small operator can publish each week without quality slipping
  • Whether AI-search tools start citing the site, and how soon
  • What the first affiliate revenue looks like, and when

The build-in-public metrics

We will publish traffic, search impressions and clicks, indexed pages, content velocity, affiliate clicks and revenue, and AI-search citations. We will also publish failures and changes of direction. Numbers will come from real sources only: Search Console, analytics and affiliate dashboards.

Why this matters to established businesses

You may never launch a review site. But the lesson carries: when AI is designed in from the start, the cost and speed of building something new change. The same approach applies to a new product line, a new location or a new service inside an existing business. That is the work of Business Intelligence.
