The AI Opportunity Map: Where AI Can Create Value in Your Business

A function-by-function way to find the work AI can improve, and decide what to do first.

Why a map, not a list of tools

Ask what AI can do and you get a list of tools. Ask where AI can help your business and you get something more useful: a map of the places where work is slow, expensive or error-prone, and what would change if it wasn't.

An AI Opportunity Map is that picture. It lists opportunities by function, estimates the value of each, and shows which ones to do first.

Start with the functions

Go through the business one function at a time. For each, ask three questions: what takes the most time, what gets done badly or late, and what never gets done at all because nobody has time?

Common opportunities we see in Australian businesses:

  • Marketing: content drafting, SEO research, campaign reporting, social scheduling, review responses.
  • Sales: lead research, proposal drafting, follow-up sequences, CRM clean-up.
  • Operations: rostering inputs, supplier comparisons, stock and ordering reports, handover notes.
  • Customer service: first-response enquiries, booking questions, after-hours answers with clear escalation.
  • Finance and admin: invoice matching, expense categorising, month-end summaries.
  • Leadership: weekly performance briefs, board papers, market and competitor research.

Score each opportunity

Give each opportunity a simple score on:

  • Value: hours saved, cost reduced or revenue gained per month.
  • Effort: how hard it is to build and roll out.
  • Risk: what happens if the AI gets it wrong, and how easily a person can catch it.
  • Readiness: whether the data and tools already exist.

High value, low effort and low risk goes first. High value but high risk goes later, with more oversight designed in.

Choose the type of solution

Each opportunity maps to one of four approaches: Assist (AI helps a person), Automate (a process runs itself with approval points), Agent (software completes a multi-step job), or Transform (the process itself changes). Most first wins are Assist or Automate.

What a good map gives you

A finished map should fit on a few pages and answer four questions: where the opportunities are, which three to start with, what each will take, and how you will know it worked. It becomes the basis of a 90-day roadmap and a clear brief for any provider, including us.
